2、soriginallydevelopedbyCambridgeESOLinconsultationwithexternalconsultantstoguideitemwriterswhoproducematerialsfortheKETexamination.ItdrewonvocabularyfromtheCouncilofEuropesWaystage(1990)specificationandothervocabularywhichcorpusevidenceshowsishighfrequency.ThelistcoversvocabularyappropriatetotheA2lev
3、elontheCommonEuropeanFrameworkofReference(CEFR)andincludesreceptivevocabulary(wordsthatthecandidateisexpectedtounderstandbutwhichisnotthefocusofaquestion)andproductivevocabulary(wordsthatthecandidateneedstoknowinordertoansweraquestion).ThelistdoesnotprovideanexhaustivelistofallwordswhichappearontheK
4、ETandKETforSchoolsquestionpapersandcandidatesshouldnotconfinetheirstudyofvocabularytothelistalone.HowthelistisupdatedThevocabularyofEnglishchangesovertime,withwordsbeingaddedandotherwordsfallingintodisuse.Inordertomaintainitscurrency,theKETVocabularyListisupdatedonanannualbasis,withthedecisiontoaddo
5、rremovewordsbeinginformedbyreferencetotheCambridgeLearnerCorpusandEnglishVocabularyProfile.TheCambridgeLearnerCorpusisacollectionofover44millionwordsofEnglish,baseduponevidenceoflanguageusebylearnersfromallovertheworldandfromwhichtheEnglishVocabularyProfilehasdeveloped.TheEnglishVocabularyProfilesho
6、wsthemostcommonwordsandphrasesthatlearnersofEnglishneedtoknowinBritishorAmericanEnglish.ThemeaningofeachwordorphraseinthewordlistshasbeenassignedalevelbetweenA1andB2ontheCEFR.ApreviewversionoftheEnglishVocabularyProfilecanbeaccessedbyvisitingthewebsite:http:WWW.enqlishprofile.orqOrganisationofthelis
7、t WordsetsSomecategoriesofwordsthatalearneratthislevelmightbeexpectedtoknow,e.g.daysoftheweek,arenotincludedinthealphabeticallistbutarelistedinAppendix1.Although,grammarwords(pronouns,modalverbs,etc.)areincluded,theLanguageSpecificationssectionoftheKETandKETforSchoolsHandbooks(availablefromwww.cambr

ExemplificationExamplephrasesandsentencesshowinghowwordsmightbeusedaregivenonlywherewordswithdifferentmeaningsneedtobeconstrained.Forexample,bankisfollowedby,lchangedmymoneyinabank*-thisshowsthatbankislimitedtotheideaofafinancialinstitution:cand
