3、r and specification of how they interact to determine a particular verbal behavior.,What is verbalbehavior theory?,1.The general problem,Skinners analysis of language includes information on the reinforcement and punishment of language and the important aspects of stimulus control and motivation tha
4、t impact language development.Skinners thesis is that external factors consisting of present stimulation and the history of reinforcement are of overwhelming importance.,1.The general problem,However,Chomsky believes that verbal behavior is much more complicated.,2.The experimental context,reinforci
5、ng event,occasion,2.The experimental context,Are they the same?,The notion of“stimulus”,“response”,“reinforcement”are relatively well defined with rsepect to the bar-pressing experiments and others similarly restricted.But if we extend these terms to real-life behavior,certain difficulties must be f
6、aced.(What?),2.The experimental context,In the first place,whether any physical event to which the organism(生物机体)is capable of reacting is to be called a stimulus(刺激)on a given accasion(契机)or only one to which the organism in fact reacts?In the second place,whether any part of behavior is to be call
7、ed a response,or only one connected with stimuli in lawful way?,behavior has not been demonstrated to be lawful(有规律的)for the other factors such as attention,set,volition and caprice also have an overwhelming influence.,behavior is lawful,but it is of limited significance for most of what animal does
8、 will not simply be considered behavior.,2.the experimental context,Chomsky argues that Skinner utlizes the experimental results as evidence for the scientific character of his system of behavior,and analogic guesses(类比推测)as evidence for its scope.This creats the illusion of a rigorous scientific th
9、eory with a very broad scope,although in fact the terms used in the description of a real-life and of laboratory behavior(实验室行为)may be mere homonyms,with at most a vague similarity of meaning.,3.Stimulus and response,For Skinner:,A part of the environment and a part of behavior are called stimulus a

12、lated”by the corresponding objects.Suppose that I use the name of a friend who is not present.Is this an instance of a proper noun under the control of the friend as stimulus?,Simply,sometimes the response has nothing to do with the so called“stimulus”.,3.Stimulus and response,We look at a red chair
