2、researchandeducationalactivitiesdesignedtocreateasynergyrelatedtoaspectsofthepowerelectronicslaboratoryexperienceusingalternativeenergy,anddisseminationofknowledgerelatedtotheimpactofrenewableenergyaspartofthesolutiontoachieveasustainablefuture&economyforthesociety,aswellastothenationalsecuritybased
3、ontherealityandneedsofPuertoRico.Thework-in-progressisfocusedontwoareas:1)Integrationofhands-onlaboratoryexperienceswithundergraduatepowerelectronicscoursesandrenewableenergyapplications2)Undergraduateresearchexperienceonpowerelectronicsandsystemswithselectedpowerelectronicstopologiesforrenewableapp
4、licationswithaspecialfocustotherealityofageographicalregion(forourcasePuertoRico).Finally,it,salsointendedwiththispapertocreateaninterestinotheracademicinstitutionsabouttheimportanceandneedofanelectricalengineeringprogramwhichshouldincludepowerelectronics,renewableenergy,andlabexperienceaspartofthei
5、rcurriculumforthebenefitoftheircountries.IndexTerms-Educationaltechnology,laboratories,powerelectronics,solarenergy,thermoelectricenergy.IntroductionThecurrentchangesintheworldwidemarketsaremakingalargeimpactinourdailylives.Thecostofoilisrisingandthereser,esarcdecreasingeveryday.Also,dramaticdemogra
6、phicchangesareimpactingthefeasibilityoftheelectricinfrastructureandeventuallytheeconomicfutureoftheindustry.Aswell,thereductionofCO2emissionsplaysanimportantroleintheproductionofelectricenergy.Thesearesomeofthereasonsthatmanycountriesarelooking10integraterenewableenergysourcesaspartoftheirpublicpoli
7、cytoproduceelectricityinasustainableway1.Butanyenergyplanwhichinvolveschangestotheelectricalinfrastructureanditspublicpolicywouldrequireawelltrainedworkforcewithspecialknowledgeintraditionalpowersystems,powerelectronicstopologies,andavailabletypesofrenewableenergysources.Foranycountry,tohaveawelltra
8、inedengineeringforce,theiracademicinstitutionsplayacriticalroleintheirdevelopment.Itiswhytodayforanyregularstudent(andpotentialemployer)isnotsufficienttohavetheoreticalcourses;butalsoitisnecessarysomepracticalexperience!Aspartofthiseffort,theauthorsofthisworkhasincorporatedastrategybasedontheintegra
9、tionofhandsonlaboratoryexperiencetoattractandtrainproperlyECEstudentsintheareasofpowerelectronics(PELS),renewableenergyandundergraduateresearch.WhyHandsOnExperienceissoImportant?Itiswellknownthatgtx)dlaboratoryexperiencesincreasetheinterestofstudentsinanareabyconnectingthetheorytopracticefacilitatin
10、ganactivelearningprocess2.AninterestingstrategyhavebeendevelopingatUniversityofPuertoRicoinMayaguez(UPRMs)ECEDepartmenttohaveawelltrainedengineeringforcewithafocusonrenewableenergyanditsrelatedaspects,specificallybytheMathematicalModelingandControlofRenewableEnergyfortheAdvanceintheTechnologyandEduc
11、ation(MimissCREATE)ResearchTeamleadbyDr.EduardoI.Ortiz-Rivera.TheintegrationoftheoreticalcourseswithhandsonlaboratoryexperiencespecificallyinpowerelectronicsandrenewableenergyapplicationshasbeenthemainfocalpointfortheMin2CREATEResearchTeam3.Themainobjectiveofthisstrategyisessentiallytopreparethebest
12、engineeringworkforcetosatisfytherequiredenergyneedsofacountryoraregionwithoutsacrificeitsfuturesustainability.ThepresentedlaboratoryexperienceshaveapotentialtoreachIOOstudentsayearinPowerElectronicsbasicundergraduatecourse,60undergraduatestudentsinadvancecoursesinadditiontothosedoingundergraduateres
13、earch.ThisexperiencehaveatremendousimpactinthelargeamountofElectricalEngineeringstudentsthatgraduateeveryyearfromconcentrationsrelatedtopowerelectronics(aroundIOOstudentsperyear)atUPRM.AtUPRM,theMingCREATEResearchTeamhasbeenpreparingECEstudentsintheareasofrenewableenergyandpowerelectronicsforpowersy
14、stemapplicationsbasedonthegeographicalrealityofPuertoRico.Toobtainthetheoreticalexpertise,theECEstudentsinterestedintheseareas,arerequiredtotakeaseriesofcourseswithfocusonrenewableenergyandpowerelectronics.Figure1illustratetherequiredECEcoursesfortheunderlevel.Eachcourseisdesignedwiththefundamentalk
15、nowledgerequiredforaproperunderstandingofpowerelectronicsanditsapplicationtorenewableenergy.ActivitiesforHands-On-L,bortoryExperienceTohavethepropercoursesbasedontherealityofPuertoRico,itisnotenoughtoobtainapropereducationonpowerelectronicandrenewableenergy!FIGURE1PELSUNDERGRADUATEOPTIONWITHFOCUSONR
16、ENEWABLEENERGY.Thatswhy,theintegrationofahandsonlaboratoryexperiencestothesecoursesisfundamentaltoattractnewstudentsandincreasetheirinteresttodoresearchinengineering.Inthelongrun,thesestepsaretheonesthatprovidethebaseforadvancegraduateeducation.Theactivitiesrelatedtohandsonlaboratoryexperienceareinc
