He is famous all over the world, especially after awarded for Nobel Prize in 1949. He wr
8、ote most about the American southern literature tradition. In his time, there appeared the literature trend of southern renaissance. Most of the writers think about the past and present, and finally they put their work in the wide south, to apply universally. Faulkner was the most outstanding one. Y
9、oknapatawpha County is a made-up word by him, according to his beloved hometown, which is the background of most of his novels. Some people say Yoknapatawpha novel is the allegory of the old south. For in his novel, we can see the miniature of the conflicts between the newly emerging industry in Nor
10、th American and the old south. In the critical field, some scholars think his use of words and the way to express ideas are too obscure, compared to the direct and colloquial words of Hemingway. But with the deeper study of him, most scholars begin to accept his writing styles. Among the 129 short s
11、tories he wrote, only about 40 have been translated. Compared to the study of his long novels, this field remains a large part of blank. The study of Faulkner in our country began late and some aspects of the research remain exploring. Thus, it is necessary to have a deep research on his short stori
12、es, in much more original ways. This literature review chiefly covers the study of Faulkner about his short story” A Rose for Emily” in recent 5years.Review:According to the study of many scholars, the research of “A Rose For Emily can be divided into the following aspects.(1) Faulkners complex of t
13、he SouthIn Xiao Minghans “Faulkner and American South”, he holds the belief that Faulkner is influenced by the American south and its tradition in a way, and his thoughts and creation are the products of southern agriculture, racial issues, Puritanism, individualism and so on. In his works, Faulkner
14、 both praises and criticizes the south, which reflects the south truthfully. Wang Youling also analyzes Faulkners southern complex from the three aspects of patriarchy, sexism and racism. No matter from what aspects we analyze Faulkners novels, we can not break away from the background. As Li Wenjun
15、 once notes, the cultural tradition and values of the land where the author lives on play a very important part on the content and theme of his works.(2)The Gothic and terrifying sense In Xiang Tianman and Liu Lius study, they think that Faulkner uses Gothic devices, by describing the tragic life of
16、 Emily, to depict the old tradition and system, and expressed strongly condemnation towards the traditional moral values and the loss of morality. The terrifying sense can also be seen throughout the whole story. (3)The character analysis of the black slave The black slave is often ignored by the re
17、aders, for he is only a servant of Emily. However, he is very significant to the story. Wang Xiaomei had a deep study on this character, and she concludes that the black slave serves as the clue of the passage, the aid of portraying heroine, and the causer of tragedy. Hence Tobe is vital to the deve
18、lopment of the passage. Long Boyu points the slave is one that have been ignored by the towns people, even by himself. Loneliness and silence marks his life.(4)The image of the elder generationSome people criticize the old south, by exposing the southern racism. On the other hand, Cheng Qianshan bel
19、ieves that although tragedy happens to Emily, we can find the rebellious spirit of Emily to the paternity. (5)Feminist study Feminism is a widely studied field both home and broad. Yang Shuli discuss this topic in “Feminist study of A Rose for Emily”. Her pursuit of pure love is the result of the tr
20、agedy. For under the special history background full of rotten system and paternity, we can disclose that the tragic fate of women is inevitable. (6)The ways of narrationIn the paper “An interpretation of A Rose for Emily from the perspective of special narrative”, Sun Huimin investigates the spatia
21、l narrative in “A Rose for Emily” of three aspects: the geographical space, the social space and the textual space, to explore the artistic effects of spatial narrative. Joseph Franks theory of space is applied in this paper.(7)Comparative study Compared to those who study A Rose for Emily from one
22、aspect, some scholars deliberate this story in a different way, by contrasting the heroine to other characters. In the thesis for master degree, Zhuang Ruxin studies this story in this way.
