His achievement was in fact in presenting the underworld and problems of poverty to the well-off i
2、n a way rarely attempted previously. Background of the writer Charles Dickens, one of the greatest critical realistic writers of the Victorian Age, was born in Landport on 2, 7, 1812. When he was 12, his father was put into prison because he was severely in debt. Charles had to give up schooling to
3、work in a shoe-blacking factory. After his fathers release, Charles returned to school, but he was only a moderate student. In 1827, he entered a lawyers office and two years later became a reporter of a newspaper. Dickenss career as a writer of fiction started in 1833 when his short stories and ess
4、ays appeared in periodicals. Success came early to Dickens; he was 25 when his first novel, Pickwick Papers, appeared and made him famous. And since then, his life became one of endless hard work. Charles Dickens died of a stroke on June 9th 1870 Upon his death, Dickens left to the world a rich lega
5、cy of 15 novels and a number of short stories, which offer a most complete and realistic picture of English society of his age. Among them are the most famous ones: Oliver Twist; A Christmas Carol; David Copperfield; Hard Times; A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations Charles Dickens is well kno
6、wn as a humorist as well as a satirist. His works are characterized by attacks on social evils, injustice, and hypocrisy. His own childhood poverty influences much of his writing. In his works he reveals the harsh lives of the poor and criticizes the brutal treatment of them Vivid characterization i
7、s the most outstanding feature of his works. He is also skillful at creating suspense and mystery to make the story fascinating. Moreover, he believes that novels have a moral purpose to encourage virtuous behavior in readers. Its this moral purpose that leads the London Times to call Dickens “the g
