Pretty clearly, anyone who followed my collection of rules would be blessed with a richer life3,boundless love from his family, and the admiration of the community. I could hardly wait until

3、New Years Day.2. When I came downstairs Maggie, my wife, was at the kitchen sink4. I tiptoed over and kissed her on the back of the neck. (Resolution No. 1: Be spontaneous in showing affection. ) She shrieked and dropped a cup. Dont ever sneak up on5 me like that again! she cried.3. You re looking l

4、ovely this morning, I said. (A sincere compliment is worth its weight in gold. )4. Look, she said, it wasnt my idea to stay out until four a.m.65. I took some aspirin and coffee into the living room. Id just started reading the paper when Sammy, our five-year-old7, came in. He was wearing the watch

5、hed received for Christmas. Say, Dad, he said, what makes a watch run?86. In the old days I would have told him to ask his mother. Instead, I got a pencil and drew a sketch of the escapement mechanism. (Always encourage your childs curiosity.) It took about fifteen minutes, and Sammy wandered off se

6、veral times, but I kept calling him back. There, I said, thats what makes your watch run.7. Then how come it doesn t?9 he asked.8. His brother Roy walked by. You have to wind it, said Roy. Sammy wound it and held it to his ear. He smiled. Roy sure is smart,10 he said.9. Our daughter Gretchen came in

7、 with her doll, Mrs. Robinson. Good morning,Gretchen, I said. Happy New Year, Mrs. Robinson. (Meet your child at his own level. )10. It isn t either happy,11said Gretchen Mrs. Robinson is sick. Probably a coro-nary12. 11. Why dont you take her to see Dr. Sammy? I suggested. He can use his new doctor

8、 s kit.12. The phone rang, and I answered it. It was a friend of our daughter Kit. Happy New Year, Marilyn, I said. What have you been doing over the holidays.(Show an interest in your children s friends. ) She said she hadn t been doing anything much. Come now13, a pretty girl like you, I said jovi

9、allyIll bet the fellows are swarming around14 .Whats that? Yes, of course you can speak to Kit. Certainly.13. Kit was in her room with the record player going very loud. I rapped on the door. She called out something, and I went in. She was in her pajamas. l didnt say you could come in! she yelled,

10、grabbing a robe and holding it in front of her. At fourteen, she has become extremely aware of being female.14. Im sorry. I couldnt understand you, I said apologetically. To ease the situation, I picked up her brand-new sweater from the floor and put it over a chair.15. l was going to pick it up, sh

11、e said defensively. You dont always put your things away.16. There was a series of shrieks down the hall. I found Gretchen in tears. Roy and Sammy were about to perform open-heart surgery on Mrs. Robinson with a scout knife15. She told us Mrs. Robinson was sick, Roy said.17. I suggested that they ca

12、rve something for their mother- like a salad spoon16.(Encourage creativity in the young. )18. In the kitchen, Maggie wanted to know what was wrong with Gretchen. I struck up a conversation with Kit, trying to establish some kind of rapport20. I touched on hippies, pop music, da

15、ting, morality and so on21.She contributed very little.Anybody else would have thrown in the sponge22, but I kept trying. For example, Maggie always dreads taking down the Christmas tree, so I thought Id do it for her. (Take over one of your wife s chores, she 11 love you for it. )23. I was about tw

16、o thirds done when Maggie came in. Oh, no! she cried. I wanted it left up for the party tonight. Can t you just sit and watch a football game? Please? It s what you usually do on New Years.24. 17、een impossible all day. I found the boys whittling on my best salad spoon, and then they had the nerve to say you suggested it24. And Kit has been in a poisonous mood25. She said that Marilyn phoned and you didn t tell her. And that you cross-examined Marilyn about her boyfriends. 26. Hold it! I sai

I explained to the assembled gathering about the books and the resolutions and what ld been trying to accomplis

19、h. Silence. The kids stood there looking uneasily at each other. A man wants to improve himself, I said. He wants to be a better husband, a better father29. We all want to be better, Maggie said. Except that when you re so considerate it doesnt seem natural. If the kids do something and you get mad,

20、 they know where they stand.27But when youre so even-tempered30. Yeah, Kit said. You didnt say a word about my clothes on the floor.You just smiled. It made me sick28.31. When I go into a bank I get rattled. The clerks rattle me;the wickets rattle me; the sight of the money rattles me;everything

I knew this beforehand, but my salary had been raised tofifty dollars a month and I felt that the bank was theonly place for it.4. So I shambled in and looked timidly r

25、ound at the clerks.I had an idea that a person about to open an account mustneeds consult the manager.5. I went up to a wicket marked Accountant. The accountantwas a tall, cool devil. The very sight of him rattled me.My voice was sepulchral.6. Can I see the manager? I said, and added solemnly,alone.

34、rs of it for presentuse. Someone gave me a chequebook through a wicket andsomeone else began telling me how to write it out. Thepeople in the bank had the impression that I was aninvalid millionaire. I wrote something on the cheque andthrust it in at the clerk. He looked at it.38. What! are you draw

35、ing it all out again? he asked insurprise. Then I realized that I had written fifty-sixinstead of six. I was too far gone to reason now. I hada feeling that it was impossible to explain the thing.All the clerks had stopped writing to look at me.39. Reckless with misery, I made a plunge.40. Yes, the

Oh-I caught his meaning and answered without eventrying to think-in fifties.51. He gave me a fifty-dollar bill.52. And the

As the big door swung behind me I caught the echo of aroar of laughter that went up to the ceiling of the bank.Since then I bank no more. I keep my money in cash in mytrousers pocket and my savings in silver dollars in a

39、sock.Unit 2TEXT I A（P 21）Englishes Randolph Quirk1 Of course a scale of of styles exists in all our use of English.Each of us works not just with one English but with many Englishes,and the wider the range of our life and the more various the contacts we have,the wider and suppler must be our comman

40、d over a range of English styles, each of witch we know how to use consistently. A haphazard knowledge of several styles may be worse than useless if we do not know the type of occasion on which each is appropriate,or if we do not know when we are sliding from one to another.We do not say, “It was e

41、xtremely gracious of you to invite me,Lady Jones,and Ive had bags of fun ”,because “bags of fun” does not mix with “extremely gracious”,and because to use an expression like “bags of fun,” we should need to knoe Lady Jones well enough to be addressing he by first name.2 It is notwe must never tire o

42、f insistingthat bags of fun can be labelled “bad” or “slovenly” English, “a lazy substitute for thought”. “Bags of fun” is no more a lazy substitute for thought in its approprite setting than is “extremely gracious”in the seting that is appropriate for this expression.As we have seen repeatedly, it

43、is the height of naivety to go round with a single yardstick,measuring English as “good” or “bad”. Take the opening suggested earlier for an informal letter: “My dear Frank, it was awfully nice to get your note the other day. Here are the words that would greatly pleased the receiver with their warm

44、th and friendliness, yet they include awfully ,get and nice, three words which have been condemned so often that many people cannot write them without having a slightfreeling of guilty.They have been called “slovenly” and even “meaningless”. Such an attitude is plainly ridiculous and can do nothing

45、but harm to the good use of English.3 But it would be equally ridiculous to reverse the judgement just as flatly.It is the type of judgement that is wrong : it is not merely that the judgement is faulty in this particular instance. If we were studing a review and found the comment “This is an awfull

46、y nice book,” our reaction to the words in this situation might well be to call them slovenly and meaningless. We do not want merely po;ite noises in a review: we want some precise observations about the books content and quality.Equally, however,we should disapprove of the English used if we were g

47、reeted by a party with the words, “I apprehend an atmosphere of spontaneous delight with your arrivlal,” wheras “Awfully nice to see you here” would strike us as just right.TEXT I B（P 22）Stop Being Coy Bryan Heath1.
