Hanfu,漢服,Intro,What comes to mind when you think of Chinese traditional clothing?Many picture Qipao the iconic Chinese dress we often see in the media.Qipao,however,was only introduced to China in the Qing Dynasty after the Manchu conquest of China(1618-1683).Prior to the Manchurian takeover,hanfu was the official clothing of China.,What is Hanfu?,Hanfu（漢服）is the traditional dress of Han Chinese people.Historically,hanfu has influenced many of its neighboring cultural costumes,such as the Japanese kimono,Korean hanbok,and Vietnamese o t thn.,Origin,Hanfu has a history of more than four millenia.In Chinese myths,it was Leizu,the wife the Yellow Emperor(26982598 BC),who invented Hanfu.Leizu mastered sericulture and used silk to make clothes.People began to enjoy a comparatively peaceful life and the primordial agriculture and textile industry came into being.Thus,hanfu was produced.,Confucius,Emperor Sun,Styles,Hanfu has changed and evolved over history.The pieces of a typical standard hanfu consist of:Yi(衣):Any open cross-collar garment,and worn by both sexes Pao(袍):Any closed full-body garment,worn only by men in Hanfu Ru(襦):Open cross-collar shirt Shan(衫):Open cross-collar shirt or jacket that is worn over the yi Qun(裙)or chang(裳):Skirt for women and men Ku(裤):Trousers or pants,Hanfu for men and women,Abolishment,After the Manchu conquest of China,Qing rulers adopted an assimilation policy which forced all Han Chinese to wear Manchurian clothing and hairstyles.Those who rebelled were persecuted.As a result,hanfu disappeared and became obsolete.,two Manchu noble ladies in Qipao,different Manchu hairstyles for men,a Manchu emperor,Qing Dynasty(1644-1912),Evolution of Chinese Clothing,Renaissance Movement,In 2003,a man called Wang Letian from Zhengzhou,China,wore hanfu in public.Strolling down the street,he was mistaken as wearing Japanese or Korean clothing by many pedestrians.This inspired others to follow his lead and advocate for the revival of hanfu.Although increasingly popular among young people,the movement has drawn a lot of criticisms.Many fear that the movement may spark nationalism,ethnocentrism,or sentiment against ethnic minorities in China.,Thank You!谢谢!,
