You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources, as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills began to be used in the ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind(磨碎)wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radios. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.21From the text we know that windmills _.A. were invented by European armiesB. have a history of more than 2,800 yearsC. have rarely been used since electricity was discoveredD. used to supply power to radio in remote area22The underlined word in Paragraph 2 probably means_.A. making something cleanerB. making something flow freelyC. making something flow in a particular directionD. making something into small parts23One of the reasons wind was discovered in the 1970s is that_.A. it is one of the oldest power sourcesB. wind power is cleanerC. it was cheaper to create energy from windD. coal and gas failed to meet the needs24What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?A. The global trend towards producing power from wind.B. The design of wind power plants.C. The worldwide movement to save energy.D. The advantages of wind power. The Greatest Navigational JourneyIn 1787 Captain Bligh was given command of “The Bounty”, a three-year-old merchant ship. His mission was to transport breadfruit plants from the island of Tahiti to the West Indies. We know the popular story of this voyage and the rebellion, in which Bligh has been presented as hard, violent and thoroughly unpleasant captain. However, there is quite a lot of evidence to suggest that this picture is far from being true. He seems to have been unusually thoughtful about the health and welfare of his men. For example he made sure that his crew got exercise, insisted on cleanliness on his ship, and adopted the practice of giving them a drink which prevented scurvy every day. When Captain Bligh arrived in Tahiti, it became clear that it would be some months before the breadfruit trees were ready to be taken to the West Indies. Instead of going off right away, he gave his crew extended shore leave. This may have been a mistake as many were unhappy about leaving when the time came. Finally, on the return journey the rebellion took place. The ship was under the command of the rebels and Captain Bligh had to leave in a small boat. Captain Blighs achievement was to get to dry land successfully. It is one of the supreme examples of seamanship. Apart from Bligh there were 18 members of his crew sailing in an open boat about 23 feet long and 7 feet wide. They took with them 25 gallons of water, 150 pounds of bread and 30 pounds of pork. They had no guns or other weapons. The boat was so low in the water that it seemed likely to sink at any time. On one occasion Captain Bligh tried to land on an island to get more water. He and his men were attacked by hostile natives and one of the crew was killed. At this point Bligh decided to sail directly to the Dutch settlement on the island of Timor without stopping. The distance was about 4,000 miles. The voyage took about 42 days and he had no advanced navigational equipment. However, his skill and commitment proved equal to the task and amazingly no one else died. It was truly a remarkable achievement. 25What is the popularly held view of Captain Bligh according to Paragraph 1?A. He was skilful. B. He was thoughtful.C. He was determined. D. He was unpleasant.26 It may have been a mistake that Bligh gave his crew extended shore leave because it caused _.A. the lack of drink B. the death of the tressC. the unhappiness about leaving D. the challenges facing the small boat 27What problem did Bligh and his 18 men face after the rebellion ? A. The threat from the rebels. B. Conflicts with local people.C. Attacks from marine animals. D. The possible sinking of the boat.28What made Blighs 4000-mile voyage successful?A. The rebels abuse. B. His great seamanship. C. The crews decision.D. Modern navigational equipment. In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet“fair weather friends”. They will be with you if you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the other person's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on (信赖) a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor (幽默), too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I've found a friend!29Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is the most important in choosing _a friend?A. understanding. B. honesty.C. reliability. D. a sense of humor.30If you have fair weather friends, _ .A. they will give you all that they have when you need helpB. you will be refused when you get into troubleC. you will become richD. you can be sure that you get real friends31This passage mainly discuss _ .A. the qualities of a friendB. where to choose friendsC. how to get along with friendsD. the importance of having a friendA new camera made by a company named Netatmo has facial recognition software(识别系统)that can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that a package has been taken to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home.Janina Mattausch is a product marketing manager for Netatmo.“The common security(安全)cameras at present are not that smart. So, they can tell you if something is moving but they dont necessarily know if its a human being or, ah, if its your kidsthey dont know the difference, so they will warn you all the time.”When family members enter a home, the new camera "recognizes" (识别 ) them and sends information to the owner's smartphone. The owner can choose to see the video then or later. But if an unknown person enters a home, the camera will send the owner a warning that will cause an alarm to sound on the owner's smartphone. That is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Darrmen. He lives in Paris."On a Friday I was at work, attending a big monthly meeting when my phone warned. At first I told myself 'Oh, it must be a mistake, maybe I have to set the system again. “But the notice on my phone was telling me that there was a movement in my flat and also a face that the software did not recognize.” He watched the video and was very surprised by what he saw. "I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on. I was watching it live on video. So I felt totally unbelievable, frozen. I asked a workmate to take me back home as fast as possible and I called the police on the way. " With the help of the video, the police found the intruder (闯入者) later that day.32 The new camera made by Netatmo can _ .A. warn the strangers B. recognize the comersC. stop the visitors D. welcome the children33The fourth paragraph mainly tells us _ .A. where the new camera is placed B. what the new camera looks likeC. when the new camera is used D. how the new camera works34We can learn from the passage that Damien _ .A. found the warning was a mistakeB. was too busy to notice the warningC. felt shocked to see a stranger in his flatD. caught the intruder by himself that day35 The writer proves(证明) the new camera works well by _ .A. giving an example B. making a surveyC. doing an experiment D. having a speech第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Having bad feeling about world? “Cheer up.” says science writer Matt Ridley. “The world has never been a better place to live in, and it will keep on getting better both for humans and for nature.” 361 ) 37It is reported that there are more than ten billion different products for sale in London alone. Even allowing for the many people who still live in poverty, our own generation has access to more nutritious food, more convenient transport, bigger houses, and better cars. 38 This will continue as long as we use these things to make other things. The more we specialize and exchange, the better off we'll be.2)Brilliant advancesOne reason we are richer, healthier, taller, cleverer, longer lived and freer than ever before is that the four most basic human needsfood, clothing, fuel and shelterhave grown a lot cheaper. Take one example. In 1800 a candle providing one hour's light cost six hours' work. In the 1880s the same light from an oil lamp took 15 minutes' work to pay for. 39 Today it's half second.3 )Let's not kill ourselves for climate change40 A child that dies from indoor smoke in a village, where the use of fossil-fuel (化石燃料) electricity is forbidden by well-meaning members of green political movements trying to save the world, is just as great a tragedy as a child that dies in a flood caused by climate change. If climate change proves to be mild, but cutting carbon causes real pain, we may well find that we have stopped a nose-bleed by putting a tourniquet (止血带) around our necks.A. Ridley calls himself a rational optimistrational, because he's carefully weighed the evidence.B. Overreaction to climate change could prove just as damaging to human welfare as climate change itself.C. Shopping fuels
