ENGLISH RHETORIC (修辭學)Spring 2009 (2/23/2009 6/22/2009)Sophomore, Department of EnglishShih Hsin UniversityChen-ching Li 李振清Ph.D.TEL: (02) 2236-8225 ext 3571, e-mail: cclicc.shu.edu.tw http:/cc.shu.edu.tw/cte/gallery/ccli/ Office Hours: 15:10 17:00, Mon & Wed.Office: Rm. 702, She-wo Building (舍我樓7樓702室)Office Hours: 13:00 4:30 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, or by appointment.Welcome back to our challenging English RHETORIC class for the spring semester of 2009 Year of the Ox. It is time for all of you to brace for the challenge of further enhancing your English proficiency from a diverse perspective. Your performance last semester was recognized, and yet you can do better this spring through OUR joint efforts at SHU.In this(second) semester, you should get further involved in the piratical teaching and learning activities both inside and outside the classroom for enhancement of your English language skills. After the linguistic forging and English learning for one semester, you are now aware that RHETORIC simply means the art of speaking and writing effectively (Robitaille and Connelly 2005: 142). In fact, RHETORIC is designed to familiarize students of English as a foreign language with efficient communication, focusing primarily on the development of writing and speaking proficiency. To achieve this goal of learning on the part of students, the instructor will help further review practical syntactic (grammatical) structures, semantic functions as well as expansion of vocabulary based on extensive and intensive reading. ENGLISHT RHETORIC endeavors to enhance the four linguistic skills of English, focusing on the development of:l Writing process (Chapters 3 - 7)l Speaking strategies and rhetorical patterns (Chapters 8 - 18)l Syntactic (Grammatical) Review and “Writing Elements” (Chapters 19 - 39)l Reading enhancement through diverse contents (Chapters 1 39; handouts)l Listening comprehension and reinforcement (Routine discussions)Class presentation through group dynamics, mid-term and final examinations will be enforced in the whole academic year. The year-long program seeks to develop both lucidity and accuracy in English through a topic-based syllabus designed by the instructor. Discussion will be carried out in the format of lectures and discussion on the part of the instructor and “group dynamics” on the part of students will be implemented as we did last semester. More authentic articles beyond what you have read (e.g., Abraham Lincolns “Gettysburg Address”, William Shakespeares “Julius Caesar” and John F. Kennedys 1961 inaugural address) will be added. These include selected articles from The New York Times, Asian Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, TIME, and NEWSWEEK, etc. Extra convincing articles will be presented for discussion, including “Long Story” by Paul Krugman (Feb. 8, 2008, NYT), “Obama Arrives in Washington after Train Trip” by Jeef Zeleny (Jan. 17, 2009, NYT), as well as the “Inauguration Address of Barack Obama”, Jan. 20, 2009.Education is a gateway to employment and personal growth. (Cf. OECD Sep. 12, 2006). Employ this course of English Rhetoric as a springboard to render you a citizen of the world.
