Bassanio returned to Venice as fast as he could and attended a trial. The reason why Antonio isn't able to pay is because his ships were caught in storm. Portia, pretending to be a young lawyer, claimed that the proposition said " 1 pound of flesh" not " 1 pound of flesh and blood" and said that Shylock is only allowed to remove flesh, but not any blood, which is impossble.
