book report of oliver twist雾都孤儿读后感One of Dickens most enduringly popular stories is Oliver Twist, its central theme is the hardship faced by the dispossessed and those of the outside of tolite society. His achievement was in fact in presenting the underworld and problems of poverty to the well-off in a way rarely attempted previously. Background of the writer Charles Dickens, one of the greatest critical realistic writers of the Victorian Age, was born in Landport on 2, 7, 1812. When he was 12, his father was put into prison because he was severely in debt. Charles had to give up schooling to work in a shoe-blacking factory. After his fathers release, Charles returned to school, but he was only a moderate student. In 1827, he entered a lawyers office and two years later became a reporter of a newspaper. Dickenss career as a writer of fiction started in 1833 when his short stories and essays appeared in periodicals. Success came early to Dickens; he was 25 when his first novel, Pickwick Papers, appeared and made him famous. And since then, his life became one of endless hard work. Charles Dickens died of a stroke on June 9th 1870 Upon his death, Dickens left to the world a rich legacy of 15 novels and a number of short stories, which offer a most complete and realistic picture of English society of his age. Among them are the most famous ones: Oliver Twist; A Christmas Carol; David Copperfield; Hard Times; A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations Charles Dickens is well known as a humorist as well as a satirist. His works are characterized by attacks on social evils, injustice, and hypocrisy. His own childhood poverty influences much of his writing. In his works he reveals the harsh lives of the poor and criticizes the brutal treatment of them Vivid characterization is the most outstanding feature of his works. He is also skillful at creating suspense and mystery to make the story fascinating. Moreover, he believes that novels have a moral purpose to encourage virtuous behavior in readers. Its this moral purpose that leads the London Times to call Dickens “the greatest instructor of the Nineteenth Century.” 3. "As he spoke, he pointed hastily to the picture above Oliver's head; and then to the boy's face. There was its living copy. The eyes, the head, the mouth; every feature was the same. The expression was, for an instant, so precisely alike, that the minutest line seemed copied with startling accuracy" .from the moment when Mr. Bumble realizes who Oliver is. 4. '"Am I,' said the girl 'Take care I don't overdo it. You will be the worse for it Fagin, if I do; so I tell you in good time keep clear of me'".Nancy protecting Oliver from Fagin's beatings. This line foreshadows the downfall of the Jew brought about by Nancy's hand. 5. "the mother, when the pains of death first came upon her, whispered in my ear that if her babe was born alive, and thrived, the day might come when it would not feel so much disgraced to here it's poor young mother named.whether it be a boy or girl, raise up some friends for it in this troubled world; and take pity upon a lonely and desolate child, abandoned to its mercy." .the old nurse sally told Mrs. Corney when she was dying. Oliver Twist is the story of a young orphan boy who reflects the life of poverty in England in the 1830s. The story illustrates (表明)the evils of the Poor Houses of the time and the corruption of the people who work there. It also shows the depths of Londons crime with an emphasis on petty robbery and pick pocketing. The main evil character of the novel, Fagin, also referred to as “The Jew”, is characterized as a money pincher with no true affections. His main goals are to exploit the people around him so he can better his station and strengthen his power. Fagin himself represents the evils of greed and ungodliness. Oliver, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. Innocent, and loving, Oliver represents all that is good in society. He abhors the thought of stealing, violence, or mistreatment of any sort, and though he is eager to please will not go against the morals instilled in him. He genuinely cares for others around him, and will do anything to make someone want to keep him. Oliver Twist is a story about the battles of good versus evil, with the evil continually trying to corrupt and exploit the good. It portrays the power of Love, Hate, Greed, and Revenge and how each can affect the people involved. The love between Rose and Harry in the end conquers all the obstacles between them. The hate that Monks feels for Oliver and the greed he feels towards his inheritance eventually destroys him. The revenge that Sikes inflicts on Nancy drives him almost insane and eventually to accidental suicide. Dickens wide array of touching characters emphasizes the virtues of sacrifice, compromise, charity, and loyalty. Most importantly, though the system for the poor is not changed, the good in Dickens novel outweighs the evil, and the main characters that are part of this good live happily ever after.
