But I couldnt understand why it was named Pride and Prejudice at that time. After the beginning of our English literature course, I borrowed this novel and read it with the question” where was pride” and “where was prejudice”. And gradually I found although the main clue of this novel was love and marriage, the theme was pride and prejudice. That was, it mainly talked how the pride and prejudice came out, stimulated and vanished in the main characters love.2、 The Plot Pride and Prejudice was the masterpiece of Jane Austen, one of the important English woman novelists. It mainly told the love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Elizabeth had prejudice against Darcy, because she thought he had nothing but pride. And due to this, she rejected Darcys proposal. After many twists and turns, misunderstanding disappeared and they were happily united. In the process of judging others, Elizabeth found out something about herself: her blindness, prejudice and absurdity. The pride and prejudice between two main characters appeared in the beginning of novel a ball in Hertfordshire where Darcy showed his pride temper. And Wickhams smear strengthened Elizabeths prejudice and misunderstanding on Darcy, what was inevitably affected by a series of subsequent events. Elizabeth gradually changed her views on Darcy when she read his long letter of explanation, and met sincere Darcy in his own manor. Finally, they walked out of the frog which was pride and prejudice and came to a pleased ending. In addition to the novel of Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane Austen decepited the marriages of her sisters and female friend as well, such as Charlotte and Collins, which were used to make comparison with the authors ideal marriage. These marriages reflected the different values on love of women who lived in the early 19th century in England.3、 Pride and Prejudice in The Novel While I was watching the film, I could not comprehend the title, but in the process of reading the novel with the question” where were pride and prejudice”, so astonished had I found that it was full of Darcys pride and Elizabeths prejudice in their conversation. Here I just selected two scenes which from my perspective were typical enough. In this scene, Elizabeth told Colonel Fitzwilliam about the ball in Hertfordshire, where she and Darcy met each other for the first time, and Darcy tried to make some explanation:“What do you think he(Darcy) did? He danced only four dances! I am sorry to pain you but so it was. He danced only four dances, though gentlemen were scarce; and to my certain knowledge, more than one young lady was sitting down in want of a partner. Mr. Darcy, you cannot deny the fact” said Elizabeth, to tell Fitzwilliam how pride Darcy was in her mind. “Perhaps, I should have judged better, had I sought an introduction, but I am ill qualified to recommend myself to strangers.” said Darcy. He expressed his real character of reserved to explain his behavior on that hall.“Shall we ask him why a man of sense and education, and who has lived in the world, is ill qualified to recommend himself to strangers?” Elizabeth replied. Her prejudice to Darcys pride had been deeply marked in her heart, thus she regarded Darcys words of explanation were unreasonable. The second I chose to show the pride and prejudice was the scene when Darcy expressed his emotion to Elizabeth” In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” Elizabeths reflection on his proposal was:” Form the very beginning, from the first moment, I may almost say, of my acquaintance with you, your manners impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others.” Inevitable, Darcys pride influenced their love and marriage. After Elizabeths refusal and his explanation of misunderstanding, he hastily went out of the room leaving these words” You have said quite enough, madam. I perfectly comprehend your feelings, and have now only to be ashamed of what my own have been. Forgive me for having taken up so much of your time, and accept my best wishes for your health and happiness.” This was acceptable of a pride man whose proposal was refused.4、 The Reasons of Pride and Prejudice Concerning the question of why did pride and prejudice come out, we must focus on the background of the novel. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.” This was the first sentence of this novel, from it, we could understand why Darcy, a rich aristocratic landowner in 19th century, was pride in his nature. As his superior status, so many women complimented him and looked forward to be his wife. Naturally, he was used to showing his arrogance and looking down upon someone in a strange surrounding. As for prejudice, we should have a look at the age Elizabeth lived in. In Jane Austens time, womens social status was inferior. There was no real way for young women of the "genteel" classes to strike out on their own or be independent. Thus, in order to gain the symbol of future security, marriage seemed to be the sole way that women could reach the goal. They must use their youth, beauty and skills to attract mens attention. Besides, Elizabeth was the daughter of a country gentleman Mr. Bennet. In the Bennet family, there was no son, thus none of the five daughters could inherit the estate of the family for it had been entailed upon the nearest male heir. And marrying off her daughters served as the main purpose in Mrs. Bennes life. Living in such a time and family, our intelligent and self-respected Elizabeth, was especially tired of others arrogance, supposed such behaviors as ignorance, and treated them with her prejudice. All in all, Darcy and Elizabeth came from two different classes, and with their own characters. To some extent, pride and prejudice were the consequence of status difference.5 、My Views on Pride and Prejudice This novel principally described the pride and prejudice on love and marriage. Why Elizabeth refused Darcys proposal, her misunderstanding and prejudice to him are a reason, but a main one is the arrogance that she dislikes him. Their initial attitudes of the two towards each other made their love hard before they could enter into a happy relationship together. Fortunately, Darcy made great improvement in his manner in order to show his determination that for the sake of Elizabeth, he would do anything to get rid of pride in his manner; while as long as Elizabeth was made known about what was actually happened between Darcy and Wickham, together with seeing Darcys change in his manner, her prejudice towards him vanished at last and she even surprised at how deeply she loved Darcy. These two common characterspride and prejudice in human nature widely exist in daily life. We always made the same mistakes with Darcy and Elizabeth to show the pride when we felt ourselves were higher than others in some aspects, and to show prejudice when we were looked down upon or when we had an unfavorable impression on somebody. And once pride and prejudice which affected our interpersonal greatly were formed, it was extremely hard to get rid of them.6 、 ConclusionPride and prejudice are kinds of ill mood states, we should learn from our main characters, to avoid and give them up in the process of getting along with others. In that case, a humorous and pleasant life will down on us. Of course, it is easier said than done. Therefore how to cope with them comes to another question. I believe while we are growing and experiencing, we could realize some new rules and principles and get fresh ideas of interpersonal, what may result in a better understanding of pride and prejudice.待添加的隐藏文字内容1参考书目:1.
