Part one :The Basic Information of this novel1.1.Introduction of Charlotte Bronte Charlotte Bronte was born in 1816,the third daughter of the Rev.Patrick Bronte and his wife Maria. She enrolled as a pupil at the Clergy Daughter's School at Cowan Bridge in 1824.The following year she was brought home because of the contagious disease. In 1826,Charlotte,Emily,Bran-well and Ann wrote about an imaginary world called Angria. In 1831 ,she became a student at the school at Roe Head and later became a governess there. From then on,she worked as a governess for several times, but every time she gave it up soon for she can not suffer the harsh treatment. So she then decided to open her own school, unfortunately, her dream did not come true, because her advertisements did not elicit a single response from the public,In 1846,she discovered Emily's poems by chance and decided to publish them. She also completed The Professor this year, but it was rejected for publication. The next year, however,Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre was publication and brought her a geat deal of money,so she led a better life. But soon Bran-well Bronte,Emily and Ann died one after another. This made she felt very upset. In 1849,Charlotte Bronte visited London and began to move in literary circles, and make the acquaintance.By 1854,Charlotte Bronte and Nicholls became engaged and then married.Unfortunately, she died the next year, probably of pneumonia, and took an unborn baby away.Charlotte Bronte opened up new possibilities for the form of English novel, and at the same time she provided a basis for which psychological exploration became a key component in the development of the genre of the novel. She also contributed much to the position of women at her time. She did much to alter the way in which women were viewed, she also demonstrated new social, psychological and emotional possibilities for women.1.2. The research of Jane EyreThere are so many comments about Jane Eyre, for example,An Analysis of the Characters in Jane Eyre,Jane Eyre's Search for Christianity. The Appearance of New Women:On Jane Eyre's New Image,Jane Eyre as a Humanist,A Brief Analysis of the Image of Bertha the Madwoman in Jane Eyre,On the Cold Image in Jane Eyre,Guided by God in the Life Jane Eyre's Religious Ideas,On the Suffering and Struggling of Woman as See in Jane Eyre, etc.but few about the feminist ideas,it is blank in this aspect. So the author will focus the thesis on the feminist idea of Jane Eyre.Different form others, the author will probe it mainly form three aspects independence, equality and liberty.Jane Eyre is the protagonist and narrator in this novel, she develops from an angry,rebellous,10-year-old orphan into a sensitive, artistic, maternal, and fiercely independent young woman. While Jane's social class is one of her biggest barriers,it best serves to underscore Jane's need for independence, both financial and emotional. She will have to forfeit her independence in the unions, and marries Rochester only when she has attained financial independence and self-esteem to maintain a marriage of equality,This self-esteem is gained through Jane's making her mark in various worlds in which she is valued for her humanity and values.Paralleling Jane's desire for independence is her search for a proper set of religious values. She rejects the extremist models of Brocklehurst,Helen Burns, and St.John, eventually settling on a spirituality of love and connection. The story told with terrific intensity. The suffering of Jane were presented so powerfully and in such a simple but plain language that they couldn't be read without emotion,it was not a romance, like other novels of Charlotte Bronte.Jane Eyre was characterized by relentless truthfulness to ordinary reality.Even when the action was most exiting, its detail was strictly true like the real life.Jane Eyre is unique in Victorian fiction. It was the first English novel. It is a work of fiction with memorable characters and vivid scenes, written in a compelling prose style. In appealing to both the head and the heat,Jane Eyre triumphs over its flaws and remains a classic of nineteenth-century English literature and one of the most popular of all English novels.1.3.The social background of Jane Eyre 1832,the year when the first Reform Bill was passed,is usually regarded as the end of the Romantic era and the beginning of the Victorian age, although Queen Victorian did not star her reign until 1837.The Victorian age(1832-1902)was a time of profound change. The Industrial Revolution had reshaped the class structure of English society by creating the rich bourgeoisies and powerful but politically deprived proletariat who would have to fight for their right.Human knowledge also made major advances that inevitably posed as a direct challenge to the authority of religion. The Victorian age is usually subdivided into the following phases:the early Victorian period, the mid-Victorian period, and late Victorian period.Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre in the early Victorian period when the conflict between labor and capital was so sharp. In this period the labor cried for democracy, freedom and equality. The orphaned protagonist of the story. When the novel begins, she is an isolated, powerless ten-year-old living with an aunt and cousins who dislike her. As the novel progresses, she grows in strength. She distinguishes herself at Lo wood School because of her hard work and strong intellectual abilities. As a governess at Thornfield, she learns of the pleasures and pains of love through her relationship with Edward Rochester. After being deceived by him, she goes to Marsh End, where she regains her spiritual focus and discovers her own strength when she rejects St. John Rivers marriage proposal. By novels end she has become a powerful, independent woman, blissfully married to the man she loves, Rochester. Edward Fairfax Rochester Janes lover; a dark, passionate, brooding man. A traditional romantic hero, Rochester has lived a troubled wife. Married to an insane Creole woman, Bertha Mason, Rochester sought solace for several years in the arms of mistresses. Finally, he seeks to purify his life and wants Jane Eyre, the innocent governess he has hired to teach his foster daughter, Adèle Var-ens, to become his wife. The wedding falls through when she learns of the existence of his wife. As penance for his transgressions, he is punished by the loss of an eye and a hand when Bertha sets fire to Thornfield. He finally gains happiness at the novels end when he is reunited with Jane.
