I am a young white female, who was raised in Boothbay Harbor a small town in Maine. I have been there sinchttp:/www.ukassignment.org/essayfw/19647.htmle I was six, my grandparents have lived there for thirty years, so I spent my summers here since birth. When I was young, I could count on both hands the number of people in out community that were different race, skin color and ethnicity. I am now twenty-six, I have left, retuned and repeated this process twice more. When I finally returned to my home town it was basically the same except it had become a slightly more diverse region. There is one more thing that had changed-I was gay. This small town, where I had grown up and had thousand of memories, good and bad, was now one of the scariest places I had ever been. I was wrong. I still feel connected to my community, and safe to be different.People in my community look like me in many ways. It is a small town in Maine, where the population doubles in the summer time. From October through May, most of the businesses in the downtown area closed. At this time of the year you see more white Americans than any other ethnicity. Now we do have other ethnicities here, but it is just a couple of families there are a few Asian Americans, a couple of Hispanic Americans, and a few more African Americans. In the summer, we also have large Jamaican population. "The population in July 2007: 1,276, males make up 576 which is 45.2%, females make up 700 which 54.8%."The town I live is a tourist town and some businesses have contracts with companies to hire Jamaicans and bring them here for the summer to work. In the summer time, we have fair amount of tourists that come from everywhere. There are a number of Russians that come to work here in the summer time at the local restaurants, like the Jamaicans. This is creating an economic impact not only on our community, but others around us. These workers are coming as low-wage workers and taking some jobs that could go to the local people, our community is struggling to find work, like the rest of America.Leaders in my community treat people as people. It is a very small town, where most people know each other. Most of the time when you are talking with a "leader", whether it is police officers, or town officials or others who would be considered a leader are laid back with each other. Most people in this community have known one another since grade school. Those that are new to the community are usually welcomed, but it depends on their attitudes and how willing they are to be members of the community. We are very blessed to have generous members in our community to provide activities for both youths and adults. Our community leaders treat people as equals. If you are talking about the color of my skin and gender, then I am considered the majority. I work at the local YMCA and grew up in this community. There are many members of the community that know who I am, or if they do not, they are getting to know me now. However when it comes to sexual preference, then I would be considered a minority. In this category, I have seen some stereotyping and harassment. I have only been back in town for the last two years, and it has been getting better, but every now and again I find an ignorant person who does not understand and feels the need to express it. However we do have other homosexuals who live in the community. We are a predominantly white community but we do have minorities that live here, however I very rarely hear of harassment or cruelty toward them. It has also been a gradual process for our community to become more diverse.(留学作业网http:/www.ukassignment.org/)I am currently employed with the local YMCA, in an after school program designed for fifth through twelfth graders. I have only been working here since January and have not seen any training with texts or work manuals. My job is always challenging when it comes to providing information to the children about the community and its people. Working with young impressionable minds, I feel like I should have had more diversity training on how to teach or respond to stereotypes, harassment, and hate crimes.Like most of the small towns in Maine, Boothbay is predominantly white. The local weekly paper does pertain to me is some ways, but I am young so there are many times I just skim the paper and really only read certain articles. I find now that I have a job that involves working with the community more, I relate to the media in different ways. Living in a small town, the news is local gossip or club and committee updates. We have a full paper, but sometimes it is filler and articles about upcoming events. We have a local access channel that shows sports events, sports talk, and other community events. I have not watched this channel since I was in high school, and the only reason I watched it then was to see if any of the basketball games I had played in were airing.Local leadership in our community is white upper class males. As a young, white, homosexual female, I do not always share the same goals, or have lifestyles in common with what they are trying to accomplish or promoting for our community. I have different concerns then they do, such as marriage, a sense of belonging, and a feeling that my needs and concerns are overlooked. My job is working with the community and with children. Some of these children come from homes that need extra assistance to survive. From what I can see, our community leaders do a nice job of supplying this assistance most of the time. There is still so much we could be doing as a community. We do have some organizations that provide extra help, food pantries, Y.M.C.A., local schools, and many other clubs and local businesses. Through the Y.M.C.A, I have many tools at my disposal to make a positive change in the community. I have recently started a leaders club for 7th through 12th graders, who want to volunteer their time to work with the community. We have made plans to start fundraising for memberships to the Y.M.C.A,. for those cannot afford it. Also make baskets for needy families in our community, who struggle around the holidays. We are also working with Rebuilding Together, which is a program in our community that partners with Habitat for Humanity. We hope this program will be around for a long time, to create strong young leaders that will carry these values with them in to future endeavors. Our community is smaller, but has a diverse ancestry. It is made up of English (23.8%), German (16.6%), French (13.3%), Irish (12.6%), Scottish (8.6%), and United States (8.1%). ( 2010 Onboard Informatics) We are growing but as it stands now the races in our community are White Non-Hispanic (97.3%), American Indian (0.9%), Vietnamese (0.7%), and Hispanic (0.6%) ( 2010 Onboard Informatics). I feel connected to the community, but I am not a minority and sometimes wonder if I would feel differently about it if I was growing today.References2010 The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce.Retrieved March 31, 2010,2010 Onboard Informatics Retrieved March 31, 2010,Tonya Baldwin & Allison Brewer, Local community members, talked with April, 2, 2010.
